Burnout is an arcade racing game in which you drive at high speed along public roads filled with ordinary traffic. Rather than closed circuits, courses run through city streets, country highways and interstates, with buses, trucks and cars moving in both directions. The core idea is risk: driving into oncoming lanes, passing close to other vehicles and drifting builds your boost meter, which you then spend for extra speed. Crashes are modelled in detail and shown in slow motion, and a heavy impact leaves you well behind the pack. The GameCube version includes single-race and championship progression that unlocks further cars and courses, along with split-screen play for two drivers. Handling is weighty and slide-heavy rather than simulation-focused, and much of the challenge comes from reading traffic far enough ahead.
