The Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside North America, is the 16-bit console built on speed, attitude and arcade conversions. Its sound chip gives the library an instantly recognisable crunch, and it is known for platformers, run-and-gun action, beat-em-ups and a deep run of sports games. Sega's rivalry with Nintendo through this generation shaped how both companies marketed themselves.
