Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is the Genesis conversion of Midway's arcade fighter, using the series' digitized sprites and one-on-one 2D combat. The roster expands on Mortal Kombat 3 with returning ninjas and other fighters alongside the cyborgs and new faces introduced in that entry, and the run button, chain combos and multi-tiered stages with uppercut transitions all return. Special moves, Fatalities and other finishers are performed with button-and-direction inputs at the end of a round, and hidden characters and secrets can be reached through codes. Modes include single-player ladders and two-player versus matches, plus tournament-style play. As with other 16-bit ports of the arcade games, the presentation is scaled down from the coin-op original, but the move sets and structure of the fights carry over.
