Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is a falling-block puzzle game using the Puyo Puyo rules, restyled with characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon. Pairs of coloured beans drop into your well, and you rotate and place them so that four or more of the same colour touch and vanish. Clearing beans drops junk beans into your opponent's well, and chain reactions send over far more of them, so the game is built around setting up multi-stage collapses rather than clearing as fast as possible. The main mode is a ladder of one-on-one matches against Robotnik's robot henchmen, with the speed and pressure rising as you go. There is also a two-player versus mode and a puzzle-style challenge, plus adjustable difficulty settings.
