Ys III: Wanderers from Ys is an action RPG starring Adol Christin, who travels with his companion Dogi to Dogi's hometown of Redmont to investigate strange events in the surrounding countryside. Unlike the overhead perspective of earlier Ys games, this entry uses a side-scrolling view: you run, jump and swing your sword directly at enemies in real time. Between excursions you return to town to talk with residents, buy weapons, armor and rings, and pick up the next lead. Equipment upgrades and experience levels both matter, and each area closes with a boss fight that tests pattern recognition and positioning. The Genesis version features a soundtrack arranged for the system's sound hardware.
