Growl is a side-scrolling beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, converted from the arcade original. You play as a park ranger fighting through stages of armed poachers and hunters in order to rescue captured animals. Combat is close-quarters punching and kicking, with weapons picked up along the way, including whips, guns and objects taken from the environment. Enemies come in groups from both sides of the screen, and stages end in confrontations with tougher opponents. Freed animals sometimes turn on the poachers and help you clear the screen. The game supports two players cooperatively, so a second ranger can join the fight. Levels move through outdoor settings such as jungle and open country, with the animal-rescue premise carried through each one.
