Marvel Ultimate Alliance is an action role-playing game played from an overhead view. You assemble a team of four Marvel characters and control one at a time while the others fight alongside you, switching between them freely during combat. Each hero has light and heavy attacks plus a set of special powers fuelled by an energy meter, and experience earned in battle is spent upgrading those powers and equipment. Stages move through a range of Marvel locations as the roster of heroes and villains widens, with boss encounters punctuating the levels. Team bonuses reward particular combinations of characters, and conversations with supporting characters between missions fill in the story. Multiple players can drop in and share a single team on the same screen.
