Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is a stealth action game in which avoiding detection usually matters more than fighting. The story opens with Solid Snake infiltrating a tanker, then shifts to a young soldier named Raiden operating inside an offshore cleanup facility called the Big Shell. You sneak past guards, hide behind cover, use tranquilizers and distractions, and manage a growing inventory of weapons and support items while radio conversations fill in the plot. Guards react to noise, footprints and bodies, and calling in reinforcements when spotted forces you to break line of sight and wait out the alert. Boss encounters break up the infiltration with set-piece fights. The narrative leans heavily on cinematic cutscenes and long codec exchanges about information, control and legacy.
