NHL 2001 on PlayStation 2 is an EA Sports hockey game featuring licensed NHL teams, players and arenas. You play full five-on-five matches, skating, passing, deking, checking and shooting with the controller while control passes automatically between teammates as the puck changes hands. Referees call penalties and goaltenders are simulated, and settings for difficulty, period length and rules let you shift the game between arcade-paced and more simulation-minded hockey. Exhibition games sit alongside longer play across a season and the playoffs, with menus for adjusting lines and rosters. Local multiplayer lets others join for cooperative or head-to-head games. The presentation follows the series style, with broadcast camera angles, replays, commentary and crowd noise between stoppages in play.
