NHL 2K9 is an entry in the NHL 2K hockey series available on PlayStation 2 among other platforms. The game uses licensed NHL teams, players and arenas, with matches played as full five-on-five hockey from a broadcast-style camera accompanied by commentary and crowd audio. You handle passing, shooting, dekes, body checks and faceoffs, with adjustable period lengths, penalty settings, line changes and difficulty levels for tuning the simulation. Play options range from single exhibition matches to season and playoff campaigns, along with roster and lineup management for the team you take over. Two players can compete head-to-head or share control of the same team locally. The PlayStation 2 version keeps the series' emphasis on positioning and defensive play rather than arcade-style exaggeration.
