NHL FaceOff 2001 on PlayStation 2 is an early entry in Sony's hockey series for the console, built around licensed NHL teams, arenas, and players. Matches are standard five-on-five affairs with body checking, passing, deking, and slap and wrist shots mapped to the controller, plus penalties and power plays. Alongside exhibition games you can play through a season and into the playoffs, adjusting lines and rosters between games. Period length, difficulty, and rule settings can be changed to make matches quicker or more demanding. The PS2 hardware brings higher-resolution player models and arena detail than the PlayStation versions, with commentary and crowd audio during play. Two players can face off locally on one console.
