Primal is a dark fantasy action adventure for PlayStation 2. You play as Jen, a young woman pulled into a conflict between demonic realms after her boyfriend is taken, accompanied by Scree, a stone gargoyle who serves as your constant companion. Play alternates between the two: Jen handles hand-to-hand combat and can take on demonic forms with different powers, while Scree climbs walls, possesses statues and reaches places she cannot to solve environmental puzzles and clear the way forward. The game moves through several distinct otherworldly realms, each with its own inhabitants, architecture and hazards. Combat emphasises timing and switching forms to counter enemy types, and the story is told through voiced cutscenes with a moody, gothic tone throughout.
