R: Racing Evolution is a racing game with a narrative career mode. You play as Rena Hayami, an ambulance driver who enters professional motorsport, advancing through events linked by cutscenes and ongoing rivalries. The car list is made up of licensed road and competition vehicles, and event types include circuit races, rally-style stages and time trials. The pressure system is the game's signature idea: sitting close behind a rival raises their stress meter until they make errors, giving you a chance to overtake. Handling falls between arcade and simulation, favouring measured braking and clean lines over aggressive drifting. Outside the story there are single races, time attack and split-screen multiplayer, with vehicles and events unlocking as you progress. This PlayStation 2 version uses the standard DualShock 2 control layout.
