Rez is a rail shooter set inside an abstract computer network, where movement is automatic and you concentrate on aiming. Holding the fire button lets you paint a lock onto several targets at once before releasing to destroy them all, and every shot, explosion and enemy sound is quantised to the backing track, so play builds layers on top of the music. Each area runs through a series of stages that culminate in a boss, and your avatar evolves through numbered forms as you absorb enough energy, dropping back a level when hit. Visuals are built from wireframes, particles and shifting colour, with the electronic soundtrack intensifying as you progress. The PlayStation 2 release supports vibration in time with the beat and unlockable extra modes.
