Serious Sam Next Encounter is the PlayStation 2 version of this console-built entry in the first-person shooter series. Playing as Sam Stone, you push through themed environments drawn from different historical settings, fighting enemies that arrive in large groups and rush you head-on rather than taking cover. Level design leans on open arenas and courtyards where you circle, strafe and manage crowds, with occasional tighter interiors and passages. Your arsenal grows from simple guns into heavy weapons, and health and ammunition are scattered generously to keep the pace up. Charging kamikazes, ranged creatures and oversized bosses make up much of the opposition, and secret areas are tucked away off the main route. The single-player campaign is joined by multiplayer options played on one console.
