Star Trek Encounters is an arcade-style space combat game for the PlayStation 2. You control Federation and other starships in mission-based battles viewed from outside the ship, steering through open space while managing weapons such as phasers and torpedoes against enemy vessels. Missions draw on multiple eras of the Star Trek television series, so the ships, opponents and settings change as you progress. Objectives mix straightforward combat with escort, defense and survival tasks, and encounters are built around short engagements rather than long simulation-style sessions. The control scheme is simplified compared with dedicated space-sim games, keeping the focus on maneuvering and firing. Additional modes allow a second player to join in, and the game presents its story through mission briefings between engagements.
