Independence Day is a flight combat game based on the science fiction film about an alien invasion of Earth. You fly military aircraft against alien attackers, taking on missions set over cities and landscapes around the world as enormous alien destroyer ships hover overhead. Objectives include shooting down enemy fighters, protecting ground targets and attacking the invading craft themselves, with a selection of playable aircraft that handle differently and carry different weapon loads. Play is arcade-oriented rather than simulation-based, using a chase camera, a targeting reticule and simple throttle and missile controls. Time limits and mission goals push you to keep moving, and destructible scenery is used to sell the scale of the destruction. Cutscenes and mission briefings frame the campaign in the style of the movie.
