Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu is a PlayStation role-playing game built around capturing and combining creatures. You play Levant, a young Cocoon Master whose village is threatened by insect-like beings, and your work takes you into a series of forests to hunt them. Battles are turn-based and fought largely through the minions you capture in cocoons, which you can then merge with one another at your wife's loom to produce hybrids with different stats, elements and appearances, giving the creature-collecting a breeding and experimentation angle. Between expeditions you return to the village to talk with residents, buy supplies and advance the story. The forests are explored from a behind-the-back view with random encounters. Character designs come from Katsuya Kondo, and the presentation uses anime-styled cutscenes and a subdued, mythic tone.
