Bomberman 64 moves the series into 3D on the Nintendo 64. Instead of flat single-screen grids, stages are built as multi-level structures you move around with the analogue stick, judging bomb placement and blast direction in three dimensions. You can pick up and throw bombs as well as set them down, and pumping a bomb increases its explosive power, which is central to solving the platforming and puzzle sections. The adventure mode is split into worlds ending in boss battles against large opponents with set attack patterns, and hidden items are tucked away in the levels for players who explore. A separate battle mode lets several players fight in enclosed arenas on a split screen, keeping the competitive side of the series intact.
