Super Bomberman 2 continues Hudson's bombing series on the Super Nintendo. The basics are unchanged: you move on a grid of destructible blocks, drop bombs that explode in a cross pattern, and try to blow up enemies or rival players while avoiding your own blasts. Destroying blocks reveals power-ups that add extra bombs, longer flames, more speed, and other abilities. The single-player campaign works through themed stages and boss fights, while the battle mode puts players in an enclosed arena for last-one-standing matches. Multiplayer supports more than two players when used with a multitap accessory. As in the rest of the series, the appeal comes from the tension of laying a bomb in a tight corridor and having a plan for where you are going to run before it goes off.
