The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning is an action platformer for the PlayStation 2 that reboots the Spyro series with a darker story and combat-focused stages. You play as a young purple dragon raised by dragonflies who discovers his true origins and travels to find the dragon elders. Each level combines melee combos, grabs and elemental breath attacks covering fire, ice, electricity and earth, with upgrades bought using gems you collect. Sparx the dragonfly acts as your health gauge and can be sent out to pick up items. Movement includes charging, gliding and stretches of guided flight, and areas often end with a boss fight. Levels are more linear than in the earlier Spyro games, and animated cutscenes with voiced dialogue carry the plot between them.
