Max Payne is a third-person shooter told as a hardboiled crime story. You play a New York detective on the run after the murder of his family, working his way through mobsters, drug dealers and conspirators across snowbound city streets, tenements, nightclubs and industrial interiors. The signature mechanic is bullet time: you slow the action down while still aiming in real time, letting you dive sideways in slow motion and pick off multiple enemies mid-air. The arsenal covers pistols, shotguns, submachine guns, rifles and thrown explosives. The story is delivered largely through graphic-novel panels with voiced narration in a noir register, along with in-engine cutscenes, and includes surreal dream sequences that break from the standard combat levels. Enemy encounters are built around tight rooms and corridors.
