Nanobreaker is a third-person action game for the PlayStation 2 in which you fight your way through waves of nanomachine-spawned enemies. You control a soldier armed with a plasma blade, and combat is built around chaining slashes and dismembering foes rather than gunplay. Enemies come at you in groups, and the game rewards learning combo strings, dodges and finishing moves to clear rooms and corridors efficiently. Progress is broken into stages linked by cutscenes that unfold the story of a facility overrun by out-of-control nanotechnology. Between fights you unlock and upgrade abilities for the blade, adding new attacks to your repertoire. The presentation is dark and industrial, with heavy machinery, mutated creatures and boss encounters that require you to look for openings between their attack patterns.
