Onimusha: Warlords is an action game set in a supernatural version of feudal Japan. You play as the samurai Samanosuke, who takes up a demon-slaying gauntlet to fight the monstrous army serving Nobunaga. Play mixes sword combat against groups of demons with exploration of castle corridors, courtyards and passageways, using pre-rendered backdrops and fixed camera angles in the style of Capcom's survival horror games. Defeated enemies leave souls behind, which you absorb with the gauntlet to restore health and magic or to power up your weapons and armor. Progress involves finding keys and items, solving self-contained puzzles, and unlocking shortcuts back through areas you have already cleared. Sections also place you in control of the kunoichi Kaede, whose faster, lighter fighting style contrasts with Samanosuke's.
