Phantasy Star is a role-playing game for the Sega Master System, set in the Algol star system rather than a traditional fantasy world. You control Alis, who sets out to overthrow the tyrant Lassic after her brother is killed, gathering companions as she travels between the planets Palma, Motavia and Dezoris. Exploration mixes overhead town and world maps with first-person dungeon corridors that scroll smoothly as you walk, along with turn-based battles against enemies shown in large animated portraits. Progress depends on finding vehicles and items that open new regions, buying weapons and armor, and leveling your party through combat. Science-fiction elements such as spaceships and laser weapons sit alongside swords, magic and monsters, and passwordless battery-backed saving keeps your progress.
