Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords wraps a match-three puzzle game around a fantasy role-playing structure. You create a character, choose a class, and travel a world map taking on story quests and side missions. Battles are fought on a grid of coloured gems: matching gems of a given colour earns you mana of that colour, which powers spells, while other matches deal direct damage or grant experience and gold. Both you and your opponent take turns on the same board, so setting up cascades and denying your enemy useful colours matters as much as raw damage. Between fights you level up, allocate stat points, learn new spells, and equip items. Additional puzzle-based activities let you capture monsters, craft items and build up a citadel.
