The Sega Genesis is Sega's 16-bit home console, known as the Mega Drive outside North America. Games load from cartridges inserted into the top slot, and the front of the unit has controller ports for two players. The standard controller uses a D-pad and three face buttons, with a later six-button pad adding three more for fighting games. The system is built around a Motorola 68000 processor with a Zilog Z80 handling sound alongside an FM synthesis chip, giving Genesis music its distinctive tone. Its library covers platformers, arcade conversions, sports, shoot-'em-ups, role-playing games, and fighters. The console also served as the base for add-on hardware including the Sega CD and 32X, and appeared in several revised case designs across its lifespan.
