Silent Hill 2 is a survival horror game in which you play as James Sunderland, a man who travels to the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife Mary, who has been dead for years. Searching the fog-covered streets, an apartment block, a hospital and other locations, you solve item- and note-based puzzles, examine documents for clues, and fight or flee creatures using melee weapons and firearms. Resources are limited and combat is deliberately clumsy, encouraging avoidance. A pocket radio warns of nearby enemies with static. Along the way James meets other troubled visitors to the town, and the story deals with guilt and memory, with the ending determined by your actions during play. Fixed and roaming camera angles, heavy fog and sound design carry much of the atmosphere.
