Sonic R is a racing game for the Sega Saturn in which the characters run, fly and skate around large 3D courses rather than driving vehicles. Each racer handles differently, with some able to glide, climb or hover, and the courses are built with multiple routes, shortcuts and hidden areas that reward exploration mid-race. Rings scattered around the tracks can be spent on opening shortcut gates, and Chaos Emeralds concealed in the environments can be collected to unlock additional playable characters. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik are among the racers, alongside metallic rivals. Modes include single races, a time attack and split-screen play for two players. The game is known for its vocal soundtrack, with sung tracks accompanying each course.
