James Pond 3: Operation Starfish continues the aquatic agent's platforming adventures, this time moving the action to the Moon and a plot involving Dr. Maybe and a supply of cheese. The levels are large and maze-like, encouraging you to explore in several directions and backtrack rather than simply run to an exit, and a map screen lets you choose between available stages. Pond can still stretch and bounce on enemies, and picks up items and gadgets that change how he moves, including options for handling the low-gravity sections. Collecting hidden items and reaching optional areas is a significant part of play. The presentation keeps the series' cartoon look and comic tone, with cheese-themed scenery and enemies across the lunar surface and its underground passages.
