Advance Guardian Heroes is a side-scrolling action game for the Game Boy Advance, following on from Guardian Heroes. You fight through stages against waves of enemies using combos, throws, magic attacks and a counter system, with a shield that can reflect incoming projectiles back at attackers. Defeating enemies builds meters that let you unleash stronger attacks, and juggling opponents in the air is central to scoring longer combos. Between stages you can improve your character's stats and abilities, carrying that progress into later fights. The game features anime-style character art, large boss encounters and a story told through dialogue scenes between levels. A versus mode lets multiple players fight each other with characters unlocked through play. Combat leans heavily on defence and counterattacking rather than simply pushing forward.
