Astal is a side-scrolling platformer for the Sega Saturn built around large, hand-drawn 2D artwork and heavily animated characters. You play as Astal, a blue-haired figure of great physical strength who works his way through a series of themed stages. Rather than relying on a conventional attack alone, he can grab rocks and enemies to throw them, clap out a shockwave and blow gusts of wind to move objects and opponents. A bird companion assists during the journey, and a second player can take control of it to help out. Levels emphasize elemental settings and boss encounters, with movement and timing puzzles woven between the fights. Presentation leans on colorful backdrops and expressive sprite work throughout.
