Axelay is a scrolling shooter for the Super Nintendo developed by Konami. Its stages alternate between vertical sections, which use a curved, bending horizon effect to give the impression of flying over a planet's surface, and traditional side-scrolling sections. Before each stage you choose three weapons from a growing list, assigning them to your ship so you can switch between them in flight. Taking a hit costs you the currently equipped weapon rather than ending the run immediately. Enemy waves build toward large boss encounters at the end of each stage, and the game makes heavy use of the console's scaling and rotation effects for backgrounds and bosses. Play is single-player, with the emphasis on learning enemy patterns and picking the right weapon for each section.
