Blackthorne is a cinematic action platformer, brought to the Game Boy Advance from its earlier computer and console releases. You play Kyle Blackthorne, a soldier who returns to the world of Tuul to fight back against an occupying force. Movement is deliberate and animation-driven: you walk, run, climb, drop between ledges and step back into shadowed alcoves in the rear of the screen to take cover, leaning out to fire your pump-action shotgun at enemies down the corridor. Levels are laid out as mines and fortresses full of switches, keys, elevators and hazards, and you collect items such as bombs and healing potions to solve obstacles and survive firefights. Progress relies on learning enemy patterns and using cover, since direct exchanges of fire are punishing.
