Carmageddon on Nintendo 64 is a vehicular combat driving game in which races can be won in more than one way. You can complete the set number of laps, destroy every rival car, or clear the map of the pedestrians milling about the streets. A countdown timer governs each event, and you earn extra seconds by ramming opponents, causing damage and collecting the power-ups strewn around the environments. Levels are open, letting you ignore the racing line entirely and hunt for shortcuts, jumps and hidden areas. Cars deform and lose performance as they take damage, and credits earned from events pay for repairs and unlock further vehicles and opponents. Handling is deliberately heavy and physics-driven, with collisions sending cars tumbling. A two-player mode is included alongside the single-player career.
