Contra: Legacy of War is a 3D take on Konami's run-and-gun series, here on the Sega Saturn. The action is viewed from above with a camera that can be rotated, and you select from a handful of commandos before fighting through stages against soldiers, mechanical enemies and alien creatures. Weapon power-ups dropped along the way replace your standard gun, and threats can come from any direction thanks to the perspective. Stages conclude with larger boss enemies that follow set attack patterns. Two players can take part cooperatively. The game also offers an anaglyph 3D viewing mode for use with red-and-blue glasses, which changes the presentation only. Settings span jungle, industrial and alien locations across the campaign.
