Darius Gaiden brings Taito's horizontal shooting series to the Sega Saturn. You pilot a lone starfighter through a series of zones, blasting waves of enemy craft before facing bosses modelled on mechanised sea creatures. The stage structure branches: at the end of each zone you are routed toward one of several following zones, so a single playthrough covers only part of the full map. Firepower is built up by collecting coloured power-ups that upgrade your shot, missiles and shielding, and a capture item lets you turn a defeated enemy into a temporary ally that fights alongside you. Presentation leans on layered scrolling backgrounds, large multi-part bosses and a synth-heavy soundtrack. Play is a single continuous run rather than a level-select structure, with two-player support in the series tradition.
