Def Jam Vendetta is a fighting game for the Nintendo GameCube that stages matches between hip-hop artists and original characters in underground venues surrounded by crowds. Combat is grapple-heavy, closer to a wrestling game than a traditional 2D fighter: you tie up with opponents, work through throws and slams, and build a meter that unlocks a powerful finishing move. Crowd members and the ring surroundings factor into the action, and taunting affects your momentum. A story mode takes a single fighter through a series of increasingly difficult opponents, with cutscenes advancing the plot between bouts and unlockable characters earned along the way. Multiplayer supports matches for several players locally, including tag and multi-fighter formats. The soundtrack draws on hip-hop tracks tied to the artists appearing on the roster.
