Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong search the Northern Kremisphere after Donkey Kong and Diddy go missing. You control one Kong at a time and switch between them, using Dixie's ponytail to hover down slowly or Kiddy's weight to break open certain ground and bounce across water. Throwing your partner is central to both combat and reaching out-of-the-way platforms. Levels run through woodland, riverbanks, mills, factories and mountain snow, with animal buddies taking over for specific stages. Instead of a simple map line, you steer a boat around the overworld, finding huts and characters who exchange items, set optional tasks and open shortcuts. Bonus rooms hidden in each stage and a collection of Banana Birds feed into extra objectives and endings. A second player can join in cooperative or competitive modes.
