This Game Boy release begins as a conversion of the original arcade Donkey Kong, with Mario climbing girders and ladders while dodging barrels and fireballs. Once those opening stages are cleared, the game continues into a much larger adventure built around puzzle-platforming. Donkey Kong carries Pauline through a series of themed worlds, and each stage asks you to find a key and carry it to a locked door while avoiding hazards and enemies. Mario has an expanded move set for the job, including handstands, backflips, high jumps and the ability to pick up and throw objects and enemies. Boss encounters with Donkey Kong break up the stages. The cartridge supports the Super Game Boy for added colour and a screen border when played on a Super Nintendo.
