Dr. Franken II is the Game Boy sequel to Dr. Franken, returning to the Frankenstein-inspired character Franky. It keeps the same basic shape as the first game: side-scrolling platform action set across a large, interconnected environment that you explore room by room, fighting monsters and collecting the items you need to open up new areas. Progress comes from working out the layout, finding keys and useful pickups, and managing your energy as enemies wear you down. Movement and combat are simple, with jumping and attacking handled on the Game Boy's two buttons, and much of the difficulty comes from navigation rather than reflexes. Presentation stays in the same cartoon-horror register as the original, with monsters and gloomy interiors rendered on the Game Boy's monochrome screen.
