Duke Nukem on Game Boy Color is a side-scrolling action platformer starring the character from the shooter series. You move through levels on foot, shooting alien enemies with a range of firearms, jumping between platforms and hunting for keys, switches and items needed to progress. Health and ammunition pickups are scattered through the stages, and larger enemies act as boss encounters at the end of sections. The perspective is two-dimensional rather than first-person, so the emphasis falls on platforming and aiming along a plane while managing your weapon supply. Duke's one-liners appear in text as you play. The handheld's colour palette and small screen keep the levels compact, with routes that loop back on themselves and hidden areas holding extra supplies.
