F-Zero X is a futuristic racing game for the Nintendo 64 that moves the series into full 3D while holding a high frame rate. Large grids of hovering machines race on tracks that twist into loops, cylinders, pipes and long jumps, with plenty of chances to fall off the course. Each machine trades top speed against acceleration, weight and grip, and a settings slider lets you shift the balance before a race. Your energy meter doubles as a shield, drained by wall scrapes and by ramming rivals, and it can also be spent on a boost once the first lap is complete; recharge strips refill it. Modes include grand prix cups, time attack, a multiplayer split-screen mode, and Death Race, where the goal is to eliminate every opponent.
