Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves moves the series forward a generation, with Rock Howard, son of Geese, leading a largely new cast alongside returning figures such as Terry Bogard. Fighting takes place on a single plane, dropping the earlier games' lane switching in favour of tighter one-on-one play. Two systems shape matches: T.O.P., where you assign a section of your life bar that grants extra power, gradual recovery and access to a special attack when your health falls into it, and Just Defend, which rewards blocking at the last instant with a small health return and the ability to counter immediately. Rounds also use a guard-break mechanic. The Dreamcast release presents the game with hand-drawn sprites and large animated backgrounds, and supports two-player versus play.
