Flashback: The Quest for Identity is a cinematic platformer, and this Sega CD version presents the same adventure as other releases with CD-based audio and expanded cutscene presentation. You play Conrad B. Hart, an agent who wakes in a jungle on Titan with his memory erased and only a holocube message from himself as a lead. Movement is deliberate and animation-driven: you run, jump, hang from ledges, roll and draw a pistol, with each action committing you to a frame of animation, so timing and spacing matter more than reflex speed. Levels are laid out as interconnected screens full of switches, teleporters, force fields and hostile guards and creatures, and progress often depends on finding items and solving environmental puzzles rather than simply reaching an exit. The story unfolds between stages as Conrad pieces together who he is.
