Gradius Galaxies is a horizontal-scrolling shooter for the Game Boy Advance. You control a starfighter through side-scrolling stages, weaving around terrain and enemy formations while collecting power-up capsules dropped by destroyed foes. Those capsules advance a selection bar at the bottom of the screen, and you decide when to spend them on speed-ups, missiles, alternative shot types, Options that follow your ship and duplicate its fire, or a shield. Stages run through varied environments and close with a large boss that has a specific weak point and attack pattern to learn. Losing a life strips your accumulated weapons, so much of the difficulty comes from recovering firepower mid-stage. Play is built around memorising layouts and choosing a loadout that suits your approach.
