The Dreamcast version of Grand Theft Auto 2 keeps the overhead viewpoint and open-ended structure of the series' early entries. You work as a criminal for hire in a city split into districts, each controlled by gangs who offer jobs through payphones. Doing work for one gang builds respect with them and loses it with their rivals, which changes who will hire you and who will attack you on sight. Cars are taken from the street and can be repainted or repaired to shed police attention, and progress is saved at churches for a fee. Jobs range from deliveries and thefts to hits and escapes, with earnings counting toward the total needed to move on. Radio stations play while you drive, and police response escalates the longer you keep causing trouble.
