Hydro Thunder is an arcade-style powerboat racing game, brought to the Nintendo 64 from the coin-op original. You race across water courses built around themed environments, using a boost meter that you top up by collecting pickups scattered along the route. Tracks are full of ramps, waterfalls, floating debris, and alternate channels, and many hide shortcuts that reward drivers willing to hunt for them off the obvious racing line. Boats differ in speed, acceleration, and handling, with faster craft unlocked as you place well in races. The physics let you launch off waves and land hard, so throttle control and boost timing matter more than tight cornering. Play is built around single races against a field of rivals under a checkpoint-extended timer.
