Joe and Mac is the handheld version of the prehistoric side-scrolling action game, adapted for the original Game Boy. You control a club-swinging caveman working through stages full of dinosaurs, hostile cave dwellers, insects and other prehistoric hazards, with the goal of rescuing kidnapped cave women. Attacks are made with throwable weapons such as clubs, boomerangs, bones and fire, which you pick up as you go and can fire across the screen at approaching enemies. Levels move left to right through jungles, caves and volcanic areas, and each run of stages ends with an oversized boss creature that takes repeated hits and has attack patterns to learn. The Game Boy release keeps the cartoonish caveman theme in monochrome sprite work on a smaller screen.
