The Legend of Zelda casts you as Link, exploring the land of Hyrule from an overhead perspective to recover the scattered pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom and rescue Princess Zelda from Ganon. The overworld is open from the start: you wander screen to screen across forests, deserts, graveyards, mountains and coastline, burning bushes, bombing walls and pushing rocks to uncover hidden caves and dungeon entrances. Labyrinths hold maps, compasses, keys and items such as the bow, boomerang, raft and recorder, each opening up areas you could not reach before, and each ends in a boss fight. Hearts extend your life meter, and rupees pay for goods from cave-dwelling merchants. There is no route marked for you, so progress comes from exploration, notes and experimentation. A second quest awaits after completion.
